After the Tears Stop: Peter’s Reinstatement
“When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." John 21: 15-17 (NAB)
Someone was on the beach, cooking over a fire. Peter wondered who would get up this early, in this bitter wind, to set a fire on the beach. Peter’s mind drifted back to another fire he was standing around recently, and the shame of what he did came crashing back all around him. Suddenly, the other men distracted him. The man on the beach was yelling and waving at them.
They all enjoyed fresh fish cooked by the Master Himself that morning. But on this, Jesus third appearance after His resurrection, Peter came away with much, much more. After walking alone with Jesus down the empty beach, just the two of them talking, His soul was lifted up, his spirit was stoked, and all the shame of the denial in the courtyard was covered over with love and the Blood of the Lamb.
